Northbrook resident Jonathan Carroll was sworn in last night as the replacement for State Rep. Elaine Nekritz (D-57th), who served her last day as a state legislator after 15 years in the legislature Monday.

Nekritz announced she would not run for re-election in June, saying she would step down before her term ends once a suitable replacement could be appointed by Democratic township trustees. The swearing in Tuesday was to come directly after a weighted vote of from Wheeling, Northfield and Palatine Democratic township committeemen along with the Lake County party chairman at about 5:30 p.m. in a closed door meeting at an undisclosed location.

“As state representative, I’ll serve as an independent voice fighting for quality schools, tax relief for middle-class families, and common sense laws that put our families first — not the Springfield insiders,” Carroll said in a written statement.

Carroll has worked as a special education teacher at schools in the North and Northwest suburbs and currently owns the Carroll Educational Group, which helps children and adults overcome educational challenges, according to a press release.

Carroll is married to his wife Katrina and has two children, serves on the Northbrook Community Relations Commission, volunteers as a youth sports coach and is a member of Northbrook’s Temple Beth El.

“Jonathan’s proven dedication to the people he serves and unique experience as an educator, father and small business owner will bring a fresh perspective to the General Assembly,” Nekritz said.

Carroll will maintain a full-time constituent service office at 830 S. Buffalo Grove Rd., Suite 120, Buffalo Grove. He plans to travel the district going door to door, holding town hall meetings and informational seminars to meet constituents, according to the press release.
